DAVID TORRENS MARTIN
Dr. David Torrens Martin is an Assistant Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where he contributes to both research and academic activities within the field of construction materials. He holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Salamanca and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UPC.
He specializes in the microstructural and physicochemical characterization of cementitious materials, with in-depth expertise in advanced analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and various forms of thermal analysis. His research focuses on understanding the hydration processes and durability performance of binders based on silicate, aluminate, and sulfoaluminate systems, under diverse environmental and curing conditions.
He is actively involved in the design and development of new eco-efficient hydraulic binders that incorporate recycled and industrial by-product materials. His work contributes to the advancement of low-carbon construction materials, with particular emphasis on reducing the environmental footprint of cement production and promoting circular economy principles.
In addition to his research on modern cements, he also collaborates in interdisciplinary projects related to the characterization, conservation, and restoration of historical construction materials, bringing scientific insight to cultural heritage preservation efforts.
Through his combined focus on sustainability, innovation, and technical rigor, he aims to bridge fundamental research with applied solutions for both contemporary construction challenges and the safeguarding of architectural heritage.
